"Where is it damn it?" she asked herself, frustrated. She'd been walking around the building for almost half an hour looking for Mulder. William started to fuss and she lifted him out of his stroller and held him against her hip. Pushing the stroller with one hand while carrying William in the other, she continued searching for the room. She was anxious to see him again. He'd only left a few days ago, but it felt like months. Turning the corner, she saw room 223. She sighed, relieved that she'd finally found it. Quietly, she slipped into the room, and took a seat in the back corner, parking the stroller next to her. To her surprise, not a single person turned their head to see who had entered. Mulder hadn't seemed to notice either. The students were either enthralled by his lecture or catatonic - she wasn't sure which. She leaned back and listened to him speak, relishing in the sound of his voice. God, she'd missed him. William seemed to have calmed upon hearing his voice too. Twelve minutes later Mulder finished the lecture and everyone exited the classroom. Mulder sat behind his desk, took off his glasses, and rubbed his temples. Scully stood up and walked towards him. Upon hearing footsteps, Mulder looked up. A smile spread across his face as he saw Scully holding William. He walked towards her and pulled her into a tight embrace. Scully looked up at him and pulled his mouth down to hers with the hand that wasn't holding William. William gurgled and they broke apart, Mulder taking William from her. William reached for Mulder's nose and Scully laughed as Mulder took his hand and kissed it. "You're not supposed to be here," Mulder told her seriously, concerned for their safety yet glad they'd come. He'd missed them. "I have something to tell you," Scully replied. He nodded, "My apartment. That was my last class for the day." They exited the classroom, Scully pushing the empty stroller as Mulder carried William to the car. ~*~*~*~ Unknown Address 8:13 P.M. Scully set up William's crib and put it in Mulder's room while Mulder played with his sleepy son. "Time for bed, William," Scully cooed as she took William from Mulder and placed him in his crib. She turned the closet light on and closed the door, leaving the baby to sleep. She walked back into the living room and sat down next to Mulder on the couch. "What's wrong?" Mulder questioned, worry filling his voice. "William," Scully stated, not knowing what else to say. "Is he sick?" fatherly concern shined through his eyes. "He's..." Scully started, trying to find the best way to phrase it. "He's not...normal," she finally settled on. "Not normal? You're not making any sense here Scully," he said, wanting clarification. "He moves things," she got up and paced back and forth in front of the couch. "He moved the mobile above his crib - without touching it. At first I thought it was the wind, but the window was closed." She paused. "Mulder, he isn't supposed to be able to do that." Mulder stood up and hugged her, kissing her forehead. "Tomorrow morning we can start looking for answers," he assured her. "Tonight, there isn't much we can do." Mulder picked up the phone and called the college, canceling his classes for the next day. "Who else knows about this?" he asked, trying to figure out the best way to go about gathering information and seeking the answers they were searching for. "Skinner and Doggett know something's wrong, but I haven't told them any more than that." He nodded and walked into the kitchen. "I need to go buy some groceries so we can actually eat, I'll be back in half an hour," Mulder told her, walking back into the living room. Giving her a quick peck on the lips, Mulder left the apartment. ~*~*~*~*~ Scully took this time to look around; explore his new living area. It was barren, save a few pictures on the coffee table. There was the one of him and his sister, one of his entire family, and, much to her surprise, one of the three of them, together. She didn't know where it came from - she hadn't even been aware that someone had taken a picture of them. Continuing her explorations around the apartment, she checked in on William, who was still sound asleep. She was glad he was finally getting his sleep, he hadn't slept very well since Mulder had left. Making her way back into the living room, she sat down on the couch and turned the television on, waiting for Mulder to return with their dinner. ~*~*~*~*~ She heard a scratching at the door and looked through the peephole. Mulder was fiddling with the key, trying to get it into the lock without dropping the food. Quickly, Scully opened the door for him and took some of the groceries. "Thank you," Mulder huffed as he dropped the food onto the kitchen table. They put everything away in silence and Mulder heated their dinner. "Sorry it's not 'real' food, but this is the best I could do on short notice," he teased as he handed her two plates, cups and silverware. "I haven't eaten since breakfast, Mulder, I'll eat whatever you brought us." Scully yawned. Upon seeing the look on Mulder's face, she said, "After dinner I'll go to sleep, Mulder. You don't have to worry about me." "I know," he told her, "but that doesn't stop me." ~*~*~*~*~ They ate dinner in relative silence, putting their dishes in the sink to be washed the next morning. Mulder stripped down to his boxers as Scully changed. When she exited the bathroom he lay in bed, waiting for her. She lay down next to him, snuggling under the covers. He pulled her close to him, resting an arm under her head and the other on her stomach. She rolled over, placing her head in the crook of his neck, moving his arm onto her back. Kissing his chest, Scully whispered, "I love you," before dozing off. "I love you too," Mulder replied as he, too, fell asleep. ~*~*~*~*~ When Scully awoke the next morning Mulder wasn't in bed. She sleepily rubbed her eyes and checked on William. After his midnight feeding he'd refused to go back to sleep, screaming and wailing for hours. Both she and Mulder had been up, and finally got him to go back to sleep. She found a note on the table amidst a warm breakfast. "Made some calls, talked to the gunmen, hope to have answers soon. I'll be back before you know it" Scully idly wondered how long ago he'd left as she ate the breakfast he'd left for her. ~*~*~*~ Scully went to check on William. He stretched his arms up as she approached, asking to be picked up. She complied and he nuzzled at her breast, looking for food. Scully sat down on the bed and fed William, hoping his father returned soon. ~*~*~*~ "Scully?" Mulder called out as he entered the apartment. "In here," she replied as she placed William back in his crib so she could button her shirt. Mulder lifted William and carried him out into the living room with him. Scully rifled through her bag, looking for one of William's toys. Handing William his favorite stuffed animal, Scully sat down on the couch and kissed Mulder. She looked hopefully at Mulder. He shook his head. "Nothing." Scully placed a hand on his arm. "It's okay, the day isn't over yet. I'm sure we'll find something soon." Mulder sighed and nodded. "Where did you go?" "To see a few people who might have information." Scully nodded, knowing she wouldn't get much else out of him. ~*~*~*~ Three days later, they finally found something. One of Mulder's sources came through and Mulder came back that morning with a thick manila envelope. "What's in there?" Scully asked. "I haven't opened it yet," Mulder told her as he sat down and dumped the contents out onto the kitchen table. The pair inspected the documents thoroughly. "What are they?" Mulder asked, holding a sheet of paper with lines on it. "They appear to be brain waves," Scully told him, trying to fit the pieces together. "Abnormal brain waves." She corrected herself. "Mulder, if I'm reading these correctly, this is the same thing that's happening to William." Scully searched the table. "See these?" she asked him. "These sets of brain waves are from the same person. These here are normal, and these aren't." She paused. "Whose are they?" Mulder asked her. "I don't know..." she stopped, checking the papers. After a few seconds of searching she found her answer. "They're," Scully looked up at him. "They're yours," she told him incredulously. "What!?" Mulder asked, grabbing the papers out of her hands. "This proves it," he said, his head drooping downwards. "It was supposed to be me all along." Scully immediately understood where his train of thought had led him. "Mulder, it's not your fault that you grew out of it. There's nothing you could have done. You know that," she told him, kissing the crown of his head. He shook his head, clearing it of those thoughts as he linked their fingers together. There would be time to dwell on it later. "So, this means..." Mulder trailed off, focusing back on William, waiting for her explanation. "According to these papers, William should grow out of his...ability." Scully waited for him to say something. "Where did these come from, Mulder?" she asked when he hadn't spoken. "How do we know this person can be trusted?" "The gunmen found these. They set up a meeting place for me and one of their associates so I could get these and be sure they hadn't been tampered with." "They don't explain what caused it," Scully stated, relieved that William would be a normal child, but still wondering the cause of this phase. "The gunmen are still looking." Their conversation was interrupted by Mulder's cell phone ringing. He relinquished his hold on Scully's hand in order to answer it. "He's dead," the voice on the phone said. "What? Who?" Mulder asked, not quite following. "The man we sent the papers with, he's dead. Found on the side of the road, shot at point blank. They know, Mulder," Langly's paranoid voice resonated in his ear. "You need to get out of there, they might come looking for you." The phone went dead. "Langly?" Mulder asked. "Fuck," he cursed, dropping the phone into his pocket. "We have to get out of here," Mulder told her, dashing towards the bedroom. "Why? Mulder, what's going on? What happened?" Scully questioned, grabbing his arm, stopping his movements. Tenderly, he caressed her cheek. He tugged her into the bedroom and threw clothing into an overnight bag. She followed his lead, still awaiting an answer. "The man who gave me the papers is dead, Langly called to warn us to get out of here, that they're looking for us." They finished packing and quickly exited the apartment. Scully fastened William into his baby seat in the back and got in the front as Mulder started the car. They sat in the parking lot as they spoke. "We need to see the gunmen, see what else they found out," Mulder stated, knowing they'd probably have more information by they time they'd get there. Mulder took her hand in his and brought it to his lips. Kissing it, he told her, "You should call your mother." He knew she was thinking along the same lines. "I know," she replied, but didn't make a move to call her. "Scully..." Mulder warned. "You don't want your mom to worry." "I know, Mulder, I know. I just...I don't know what to tell her." Mulder took the phone and dialed. "What are you doing?" Scully asked him. "Calling your mom." "Mulder -" "Shh, I'm on the phone Scully," he teased. "Hi, Mrs. Scully? This is Fox Mulder...no, Dana's fine, she's right here next to me, would you like to talk to her? Okay, hold on." Mulder handed Scully the phone. "Your mom wants to talk to you," he told her, stating the obvious. "Mom?" she questioned into the phone. "Yes, I'm fine. Well, nothing's wrong exactly...No, there's nothing wrong with William..." Mulder glanced at her and she shrugged. 'No use in worrying my mom for nothing' her look conveyed. "We're going out of town for a few days and you might not be able to contact us...Yes, we'll be careful...Don't worry mom, we'll be fine. I know, I love you too...Bye." Scully hung up her cell phone and placed it on the dashboard. "Drive, Mulder," she instructed. And their quest for answers, for the truth, began. ~*~*~*~ The End.
